Butterflies of the Texas Panhandle by Dr. Ashley Campbell

Butterflies of the Texas Panhandle by Dr. Ashley Campbell In-Person

Photography is a passion of Dr. Campbell's and these are photos she's taken of flowers in various gardens and butterflies in various butterfly habitats. Approximately 20 photos (8 x 10) of florals and butterflies.

From Dr. Campbell:

"Have you really ever stopped to think about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly? This transformation is truly amazing. A tiny egg is laid on a host plant. A caterpillar (larva) then proceeds to eat large amounts of this plant every day…shedding its skin and becoming larger and larger. Then, it forms a chrysalis (pupa). After a period of time, a beautiful butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. This insect undergoes such a complete and total metamorphosis.

"This exhibit focuses on butterflies of the Texas Panhandle. I found most of these butterflies in my own backyard. Some of them I raised from eggs that were laid on my plants; the others I found at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. The butterflies include the monarch, the queen, the Eastern black swallowtail, the pipevine swallowtail, the painted lady, the cabbage white, the common buckeye, the red admiral, the gulf fritillary, and the pearl crescent.

"If you are interested in raising your own butterflies, simply plant host plants. For example, the host plant for black swallowtails is fennel or dill. The butterflies will find your plants and lay their eggs there. If you want to raise monarchs, you must plant milkweed. Each type of butterfly has it own host plant(s). With some quick research, you can find the host plants for any of the butterflies in our region. In addition, keep pesticides away from your host and nectaring plants as they will kill butterflies. In my own backyard, we feature zinnias, roses of Sharon, butterfly bushes, and various types of sunflowers."
